About this actor

Kang Soo-yeon, born on August 18, 1966, in Seoul, South Korea, was a celebrated actress known for her significant contributions to Korean cinema and television. Beginning her career as a child actress, she gained national fame with roles in "A High School Student's Diary" and popular comedy films like "Whale Hunting 2" and "Mimi and Cheolsu's Youth Sketch." However, it was her performance in Im Kwon-taek's "The Surrogate Woman" in 1987 that catapulted her to international acclaim, earning her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice International Film Festival—the first Korean actor to achieve such recognition. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Kang continued to solidify her status as one of Korea's most prominent stars, earning accolades such as the Bronze St. George award at the Moscow International Film Festival for her role in "Come Come Come Upward." Despite her slowing output in the 2000s, she found success on television with "Ladies of the Palace," and her final film appearance before her untimely passing was in "Juri" in 2013. Kang was in the midst of returning to film with Netflix's "Jung_E" when she tragically suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and passed away on May 7, 2022. Her legacy as Korea's "first world star" endures, reflecting her impact on the global stage.
