AccuWeather

Hyperlocal weather forecasts with Korea-specific minute-by-minute precipitation tracking.

What it does

AccuWeather is the world's most downloaded weather app, providing hyperlocal forecasts with proprietary MinuteCast technology that predicts precipitation start and end times to the minute for the next four hours. The app covers Korea with high-resolution data, including hourly, 10-day, and 45-day outlooks; severe weather alerts from Korean Meteorological Administration integration; RealFeel Temperature (factoring sun, wind, and humidity); WinterCast for snowfall probability; and air quality indices. The free tier is comprehensive enough for daily use; the Premium+ tier removes ads and adds advanced radar layers.

Why travelers need it

Korea's weather is highly seasonal and regional — Seoul's humid summers differ dramatically from Jeju's marine climate, and Busan's coastal fog patterns are entirely separate. The built-in Weather app on most phones provides only basic forecasts. AccuWeather's MinuteCast is uniquely useful for planning walks between subway exits and restaurants during Korea's sudden summer downpours (장마철 monsoon season). The RealFeel Temperature is more useful than the raw temperature reading for choosing what to wear — the humidity in July makes 30°C feel like 36°C, while the dry chill in January makes -5°C feel like -12°C.

Key features

  • MinuteCast — hyperlocal precipitation forecasts with exact start / end times for the next 4 hours.
  • RealFeel Temperature that accounts for humidity, wind, sun intensity, and air density.
  • WinterCast for snowfall probability and accumulation forecasts during Korea's cold season.
  • 45-day extended outlook for trip planning — useful for choosing the best season to visit.
  • Severe weather alerts sourced from the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • MinuteCast is measurably more accurate than Apple Weather or Google Weather for Korean precipitation timing.
  • RealFeel Temperature is the most useful metric for deciding what to wear in Korea's humid summers.
  • Forecast data is updated hourly, so you get a reliable morning check before heading out for the day.

Caveats

  • The free tier shows ads that can be intrusive; Premium+ is required for an ad-free experience.
  • The 45-day forecast has low confidence past 10 days — useful for trend spotting, not daily planning.
  • Some features (like advanced radar layers) require a paid subscription.

How to install

  1. 1Open the Apple App Store or Google Play and search 'AccuWeather'.
  2. 2Install the app by AccuWeather International, Inc.
  3. 3On first launch, grant location permission for automatic local forecasts.
  4. 4Customize the home screen widgets to show the metrics you care about (MinuteCast, RealFeel, AQI).

Basic usage

  • The home screen shows current conditions with RealFeel Temperature and a 12-hour forecast strip below.
  • Tap MinuteCast to see minute-by-minute precipitation probability for the next 4 hours — useful for timing walks or taxi calls.
  • The 10-day tab provides a reliable mid-range outlook for planning day trips outside Seoul.
  • Enable severe weather alerts in settings to receive push notifications for typhoon warnings, heavy snow advisories, and heat waves issued by the KMA.

Tips for foreign travelers

  • Check MinuteCast before leaving your accommodation during monsoon season (late June–late July) — it tells you exactly when the rain will pause.
  • RealFeel Temperature is the number to trust, not the displayed temperature: 30°C with 80% humidity in Seoul feels far hotter than 30°C in a dry climate.
  • The 'AccuWeather Alerts' section includes KMA-originated warnings for typhoons (태풍) and heavy snow (대설) — these are critical during fall typhoon season (August–October).
