KakaoTalk

Korea's universal messenger — how everyone here actually communicates.

What it does

KakaoTalk is the messaging app for Korea — over 90% of the country uses it. Korean businesses, hotels, guides, and even government agencies routinely give a KakaoTalk ID instead of an email. The app does free text, voice, and video calls; group chats; file sharing; emoji-style 'sticker' packs; in-chat translation; and integrated services like Kakao Pay (peer-to-peer payments) and Kakao Map. For a traveler, having KakaoTalk installed is the difference between 'I can reach the guide if my flight is delayed' and 'I'm hoping their email gets read'.

Why travelers need it

Hotel front desks, tour operators, hostel hosts, and many small businesses use KakaoTalk as their primary contact channel — much more than email or even phone. Sending them an iMessage or WhatsApp often goes unanswered. With KakaoTalk installed and a quick ID exchange, you get fast replies, can share your location for pickup, and can voice-call abroad for free over wifi.

Key features

  • Free unlimited text and voice/video calls over wifi or data.
  • In-chat translation — long-press a Korean message to translate to English.
  • Location sharing that drops a NAVER Map pin into the conversation.
  • Group chats with up to 1,500 people (useful for tour groups).
  • Kakao Pay for splitting bills with Korean friends without cash exchange.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • Everyone in Korea has it — there's no friction asking someone to scan your QR.
  • Built-in translation means you can chat with hosts who don't speak English.
  • Free international calling over wifi is genuinely useful for trip logistics.

Caveats

  • Sign-up requires a phone number (any country works, but you need access to receive an SMS).
  • The default sound and notification settings are aggressive; tune them on day one or your phone will buzz constantly.
  • Strangers sometimes add you to spam group chats — review the privacy settings during setup.

How to install

  1. 1Install 'KakaoTalk' from the App Store or Google Play (publisher: Kakao Corp.).
  2. 2Open the app, accept terms, and enter your phone number — international numbers are supported.
  3. 3Receive the SMS verification code and enter it.
  4. 4Set a profile name (Latin or Hangul, both ok) and an optional photo.
  5. 5Adjust notification sound: Settings → Notifications → turn off 'Sound' if you don't want every message to chime.

Basic usage

  • Friends are added by phone-number sync, by searching their Kakao ID, or by scanning a QR code from their profile.
  • Open a chat and type — message goes through over wifi or data, no SMS charge.
  • Tap the + button in a chat to share a NAVER Map location, photo, or file.
  • Long-press a received message → Translate to render Korean in your home language.

Tips for foreign travelers

  • When you check into a hotel, ask the front desk for their KakaoTalk ID — it's faster than calling the desk if you have a question.
  • Disable 'Friend recommendation' in privacy settings so strangers can't add you by phone number alone.
  • Pin your tour-group chat to the top so you don't miss schedule updates buried under marketing channels.
