WOWPASS
Prepaid card + T-money + currency exchange in one app for foreign travelers.
What it does
WOWPASS is an all-in-one prepaid card designed specifically for foreign travelers in Korea. It combines a currency exchange card, a T-money transit card, and a payment card into a single physical card controlled through a mobile app. Travelers load Korean won onto the card at competitive exchange rates via WOW Exchange machines found at airports, subway stations, and tourist hotspots. The card works everywhere that accepts regular debit or T-money payments — convenience stores, restaurants, subway gates, taxis, and vending machines. The companion app tracks balances in your home currency, shows transaction history, locks the card if lost, and locates nearby reload machines.
Why travelers need it
Korea is still heavily cash-dependent in small shops, traditional markets, and street food stalls. Carrying large amounts of cash is inconvenient and risky. The WOWPASS card eliminates both problems: you get near-interbank exchange rates (far better than airport currency desks), ATM fees vanish, and the built-in T-money chip covers all public transit without a separate card. If you lose the card, the app locks it instantly and the remaining balance is recoverable — something impossible with cash. Many popular cafes and chain stores also offer cashback rewards (up to 20%) when paying with WOWPASS, making it cheaper than credit cards with foreign transaction fees.
Key features
- Prepaid debit card with currency exchange loaded at WOW Exchange machines — better rates than airport counters or hotels.
- Built-in T-money function for Seoul Metro, buses, and taxis — no separate transit card needed.
- Real-time balance tracking in your home currency with push notifications for every transaction.
- Card lock / unlock from the app if lost or stolen — balance recoverable at any WOW Exchange machine.
- Finder map for nearby WOW Exchange machines around subway stations, hotels, and shopping districts.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- Exchange rates are consistently better than Incheon Airport currency desks.
- Free to issue and no monthly fees — only the loaded amount is yours.
- Cashback rewards at partner stores (cafes, restaurants, beauty shops) of up to 20%.
Caveats
- The card must be picked up in Korea — no advance shipping abroad.
- Reload machines are common in Seoul but sparse in rural areas.
- The app requires a smartphone to manage; losing both card and phone is a hassle to unwind.
How to install
- 1Download the WOWPASS app from the Apple App Store or Google Play before arriving in Korea.
- 2Open the app and select your home country currency — you do not need to register an account yet.
- 3Locate a WOW Exchange machine at Incheon Airport arrivals hall, a major subway station, or Myeongdong.
- 4At the machine, select your language, insert cash (KRW or foreign bills), and collect your WOWPASS card.
Basic usage
- Tap the T-money symbol on the card reader when entering and exiting subway gates — the fare is deducted from your WOWPASS balance automatically.
- Swipe or insert the card like any debit card at restaurants, convenience stores, and taxis.
- Check your remaining balance and recent transactions in the app; balances display in both KRW and your home currency.
- If your balance runs low, find the nearest WOW Exchange machine on the app's map and reload with Korean won.
Tips for foreign travelers
- Load a few days' worth of spending at once at the airport machine — the line at Myeongdong machines can be long on weekends.
- Keep your card linked in the app even if you lose it — the balance is recoverable at any machine with the same phone number.
- Use WOWPASS for transit and small purchases, and keep a credit card as backup for large hotel deposits that require a hold.
