Step into the Seoul Museum of History, a captivating institution that chronicles the vibrant evolution of Seoul from its prehistoric origins to its modern-day splendor. This expansive museum offers a deep dive into the city's past, featuring detailed exhibits, large-scale models of old Seoul, and displays illustrating daily life through different eras. Visitors consistently praise its well-organized layout, clear English explanations, and the impressive city model, making it an ideal destination for anyone seeking to understand Seoul beyond its contemporary facade.
For fans of the K-drama *Weak Hero*, the Seoul Museum of History holds a memorable, albeit humorous, significance. It served as the backdrop for a unique scene where Yeon Si-eun and his friends, as a form of punishment, were tasked with volunteering at the museum. Their duties included donning traditional hanbok and posing for photos with visitors, creating a lighthearted moment amidst the drama's intense narrative.
Beyond its on-screen appearance, the museum offers a serene and educational experience. Whether you're exploring the transformation of Joseon-era streets into bustling modern avenues or discovering quiet study areas, the Seoul Museum of History provides a compelling journey through time, offering a rich cultural experience that is both informative and engaging.

A really solid place to understand Seoul beyond just palaces and cafes. The museum walks you through how the city evolved—from Joseon-era streets to modern Seoul—and it’s surprisingly easy to follow, even if you don’t know much Korean history. Most exhibits have English explanations, and the layout is spacious and well organized. I especially liked the large-scale models of old Seoul and the sections showing how daily life changed over time. It’s calm, educational, and not overwhelming.
Great museum to help to understand Seoul history. The model of the city is spectacular. We spent about two hours there. It was raining that day so we didn’t get to explore the grounds. They did a great job with displays from the time of Kings through Liberation day and beyond.
Interesting to see how Seoul has changed over the years with special exhibits showing how life was like in thr 80s. Nice hidden and quiet study area upstairs that a few locals were taking advantage of.
One of the best museum I ever went to. It feels very planned out, from start to finish. You go through multiple eras of South Korean history with different exhibitions you can experience. I really enjoyed the information flyers you could take for each part, especially since most parts were only written in Korean but those flyers were available in Japanese, Chinese and English as well. Once you’re done, you’re able to stamp a little card at the end with a very friendly man that helps you out.
Nice free museum to learn something about Seoul. Could’ve had a bit more information about the city during the Korean war. Loved the miniature city at the end of the exhibition!
