The series follows the life of Hur Jun, a historical figure from the Joseon Dynasty who rises from being a socially marginalized illegitimate child to becoming one of the greatest physicians in Korean history. Guided by his mentor Yu Ui-taek, Hur Jun dedicates himself to healing the people and ultimately compiles the "Donguibogam," a comprehensive medical text.

The show garnered immense popularity, achieving an average rating exceeding 50% and becoming a cultural phenomenon in South Korea. It has been compared to "Dae Jang Geum," with some referring to it as the male counterpart due to the similarities in the protagonists' journeys. The series also aired under different titles in other regions, such as "The Way of Medicine: The Epic Doctor Hur Jun" in Taiwan.
